Miss Thing

Have you purchased the THING anthology yet?

On May 28, 2025, Sasha Frere-Jones reviewed the THING anthology in an article titled “Miss Thing” published in the Baffler.

My favorite line: “You can rig the game, but you can’t fake influence!”

Sasha’s review is brilliant! His writing gives us snippets from several of the issues while comparing 80s culture to our contemporary world views and practices.

Who knew that THING was “both a chat and a billboard, a vector, small but moving in a direction that was about to open unto a much larger cultural direction?”

“For anybody who had found the culture through hits by Soul II Soul or Black Box, THING was a way deeper in. For those who understood who all the bouncers and bathroom divas were, THING was a note passed between desks that outsiders would never be able to decode.”

THING told an entire generation of young Black queer people that they were beautiful and deserved a magazine the equivalent of Vogue or Interview… The combination of political incorrectness and insularity, paradoxically, created a safe space.”

This review will make you want to purchase a copy of the anthology.
